“My life has transformed since engaging with Rural Rainbows – it’s been a journey of growth, confidence, and self-acceptance,” says Nexus (it/they).
Seeking community and understanding, they took a courageous step – joining a space where they could heal, grow, and truly belong.
From a young age, Nexus explored their identity amidst challenges, including bullying and rejection.
“I started questioning who I was at just 12 years old. High school was a time of learning more about myself—through the internet, close friends and discovering the LGBTQ+ community," Nexus said.
"Although I faced hardships, the support of my peers and friends taught me to embrace who I am, no matter what.”
Despite these struggles, Nexus knew they needed real-world support.
“When I first connected with the program, I struggled with self-confidence and socialising," they said.
"Rural Rainbows offered a warm, welcoming environment where I felt safe opening up about my struggles.”
A pivotal moment came during a conversation with Teddy, a Rural Rainbows peer supporter.
“I sat down with Teddy and shared issues I was facing at home." Nexus said.
"The advice Teddy gave me was life-changing – it improved my situation at home and strengthened my connection to my living space. It gave me the tools to face challenges with resilience.”
More than just advice, Rural Rainbows showed up – checking in, offering support and ensuring Nexus had what they needed to thrive.
Over time, those small, consistent acts of care helped them rebuild confidence and self-worth.
“Participating in Rural Rainbows has changed my life for the better,” Nexus shares.
“I feel more confident, motivated, and comfortable in myself. Being part of a supportive community has helped me feel less isolated and more connected to others. It’s been a profound shift in my mental health and overall wellbeing.”
Paying it forward: from seeking support to giving it
Today, Nexus pays it forward, volunteering with Rural Rainbows to support others navigating similar challenges. Their journey from seeking help to becoming a mentor is a testament to the power of community and understanding.
For anyone hesitant to take that first step, Nexus offers this advice.
“Get yourself out there. Programs like Rural Rainbows offer small, warm spaces filled with like-minded people. Even if you don’t engage much at first, simply being in that environment can make you feel less alone and more included.”
For Nexus, joining Rural Rainbows was more than finding support – it was finding strength, courage and pride in who they are.
Today, the program continues to be a beacon of connection for LGBTQIA+ individuals in rural areas, ensuring that no one has to navigate their journey alone.
