David’s journey is proof that when we put people first we create lasting impact.

For nearly 20 years, David Neef has been a guiding light for carers, turning his own experience into a source of strength and support for others.

Breaking down barriers

David joined Each in 2006, inspired by his own journey as a carer for his wife. David started as a carer peer worker at Maroondah Hospital’s inpatient unit.

“It was a moment of shared understanding,” he recalls. “I saw how lived experience could break down barriers and offer real support – and I knew I wanted to be part of that.”

Not long after joining, David identified a critical gap: carers looking after their partners lacked a dedicated support group.

Determined to bridge this gap, he launched a support group from the Each Lifeworks building in 2007.

What started as a small Saturday afternoon gathering in 2007 has grown into a thriving community – meeting every month for 17 years, forging lifelong friendships and providing unwavering support.

“It’s incredible to see how it’s grown,” he recalled. “We’ve built lasting friendships, gone on trips together and created a space where carers feel truly supported.”

Turning challenges into strengths

David’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Without traditional supervision in his early days, David had to forge his own path – developing resilience, creativity and a deep ability to connect with others.

“[The lack of supervision] pushed me to develop strong relationships and networks of support,” he said.

“In hindsight, it made me better at connecting with others – a skill that’s been invaluable throughout my career.”

Since then, David has worked across multiple sites and teams, deepening his understanding of community mental health. Today, as a carer peer educator, he plays a leadership role within the lived experience workforce, working alongside his team to empower others.

“What gets me out of bed every day is the creativity and fulfillment of our work and the amazing team I get to share it with,” he said with a smile.

Advice for future team members

For those considering a role at Each, David offers this wisdom.

“Focus on building sincere, caring relationships with people around you. It’s as important as the work itself.”

David’s journey is proof that when we put people first – truly listening, supporting and creating space for connection – we create lasting impact.

By listening, supporting, and creating spaces for connection, he has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless carers. His work demonstrates that prioritising people – their stories, needs, and strengths – leads to lasting impact.
